Pioneering professor Dr. Rae Mellichamp states in his book, Ministering in the Secular University, "...To achieve the maximum influence, one must work together with other like-minded Christians on campus. This is the principle of synergy at work...." This is based on the principle of Hebrews 10: 24-25 enjoining believers to not foresake gathering to "stimulate one another to love and good deeds." But how? One useful strategy is through weekly gatherings known as Faculty Fellowships or Forums.

What is a Faculty Fellowship? Mellichamp thinks of it as "a think tank or research and development activity through which faculty and staff come together on a regular basis to creatively think about, discuss, and plan how they as Christians can individually and corporately impact students, colleagues and the institution for the cause of Christ." It is not intended merely as a place to gether for fellowship without producing effect on the university population and environment.

Faculty Fellowships (or whatever name is chosen) can be tailored to the group and their situation, but may entail things like:

  • Planning Sessions (outreach, meetings, etc.)
  • Prayer and Fellowship
  • Christian Leadership (or other) Training
  • Faculty/Staff Testimonies
  • Discipline-based Position Papers
  • Book Reviews
  • Ministry Updates
  • Legal Issues Updates
  • Open Sessions

For details see chapter 7, Ministering in the Secular University.
