The purpose of FC's Academic Initiative is to help Christian professors integrate the Christian worldview into their research, publishing and teaching in such a way that it contributes to the re-shaping of the plausibility structures of the university campus and of society. Patrick and Rachel believe that this is a crucial part of getting the Christian message a proper hearing in a post-Christian culture. Through personal interaction, discussion groups, conferences, and other means, the Academic Initiative team helps Christian professors engage the intellectual resources that are available to them in historical Christian thought and apply those resources to their own disciplines.
Patrick and Rachel began their work with Campus Crusade in the student ministry, most recently at the University of Pennsylvania , where they served from 1991 to 1995. Rachel also directed the Campus Crusade women's ministry at Northwestern University while Patrick attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School .
They live in a rural setting outside Nashville , Tennessee , near Patrick's boyhood home. They have two young children, a girl and a boy. They all enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and gardening. Rachel also enjoys making greeting cards (stamping) and reading. When Patrick has some free time he enjoys hunting and reading. They are both rather lowbrow Anglophiles, enjoying Merchant-Ivory productions, Masterpiece Theatre, and English literature and history.
